This table will indicate if a Natural Community Verification has already been conducted in WATERS for this monitoring location (SWIMS Station). If the fish data perfectly match the modeled NC and the tolerance tests are met, then the database will automatically Verify the modeled NC as correct. This can be overriden by staff by completing an NC Verification and updating the WATERS database.

Antecedent Weather

Use this app to evaluate antecedent precipitation and temperature relative to historical range of variation. The plots are created using the lat/longs associated with the Survey Sequence Number. The plots are interactive, and allow the user to pan, zoom, etc. The data is updated continuously and is avaialble 5 days prior to today's date.

It will take ~60 seconds to run the analysis and create the plots

Precipitation index is the weighted average daily precipitation (mm) in the preceding four years, with more weight on recent precipitation, and is an indicator of stream baseflow. Temperature index is the average air temperature (C) in the preceding 30 days, and is an indicator of water temperature. Historical range of variation (light blue band is 10th-90th percentile, dark blue band is 25th-75th percentile) is for last 30 years.

General Usage Tips

  • This app will work anywhere there is an internet connection. However, if the user is connected to WDNR VPN the app WILL NOT load as it is blocked by the VPN security. The app will work if you are hard-wired into WDNR internet or using WIFI with the VPN disabled
  • If there are continuing issues opening the App, or using the Report function try clearing you cookies, cache and browsing history.
  • Currently this tool has fish data loaded from 2003-late-2018, additional years of data will be added shortly.
  • The user may select <Undetermined> for an NC and the report will print the fish guild figure using the modeled NC.
  • Some operations of this app are computationally intensive (initial startup, antecedent weather, etc.). If multiple users are conducting a computationally intesive step simultaneously the operation may slow down. This will usually be resolved in under a minute and the user can move freely and quickly through the app again. If issues persist, try refreshing the browser.

  • Fish Summary Tab Tips

  • This app works off of Survey Sequence Numbers, the user should have those on-hand for any NC Verification you wish to perform
  • Some operations will not work until a NC is selected from the dropdown menu. You can always begin the Verification process by selecting the Modeled NC
  • The WATERS table is pulling directly from the WATERS Database with minimal manipulation. The downloads are only conducted periodically, so that very recent NC Verifications may not show up in this table. The WATERS Database is the official record of Natural Community Verification decisions.
  • Guild Test Tab Tips

  • This tab performs the same guild tests as in the FMDB or NC Verification Excel spreadsheet, but displays the information graphically
  • The model-predicted NC table will give the user a suggestion on the first NC to try Verifying. This prediction is based on the thermal and size guild percent individuals table. If thepercentages in this table are unreliable because of degradation, or inefficient or non-standard sample collection, then the model-predicted NC will also be unreliable.
  • If you scroll down the user can compare three different guild test figures by selecting new NC in the dropdown menus. Only the top figure will be saved in the NC Report pdf.
  • Additional Sites Tab Tips

  • This tab displays additional samples collected on the same WBIC and SWIMS Station as the sample entered into the 'Survey Seq No' box.
  • If you click on any row in the tables (below the map) the page will automatically select that survey for NC Verification. If you do this by accident, the survey you were initially analyzing will still be located in the tables and you can easily switch back by clicking on that row.
  • All of the NCs displayed for additional sites (in the map popups or tables) are modeled NCs, this all does not yet reflect previously Verified NCs stored in WATERS. This will be eventually be incorporated in future versions.
  • In the case that there are many surveys on a particular WBIC, the user can use the search function to narrow the list. For example, it you are looking for a SWIMS Station you can enter part of the name in the search box (e.g. HWY 23).
  • Antecedent Weather Tab Tips

  • This step is computationally intensive and will take ~40-60 seconds to perform. Operations on other tabs will also be slow while this is running
  • Initially the location and timeframe will be selected based on information from the Survey Sequence Number. You can look at other time periods by adjusting the slider.
  • There are two links for the stand-alone version of this tool. One that works very quickly but the percentiles are crude (NLDAS) and one the is exactly similar to the app version (NLDS2). If you right click and open in a new tab you can use the map select feature and run the analysis on any part of the state.
  • The weather analysis works on a scale similar to a HUC12. If you are verifying many sites sampled in the same year in a HUC12, it will be unnecessary to run the antecedent weather analysis for every site.
  • Report Tab Tips

  • The report configuration is still under development but you may use it to memorialize any NC Verifications as a .pdf while using this tool.
  • Be thorough with your comments, it will be really beneficial to future WQ Biologists!
  • Use the checkboxes to insert standard language about Verification failures because of fish tolerances or extreme weather.
  • If you want paragraphs to be preserved in the report, you need to add a blank line in the comment box (i.e. hit <enter> twice).
  • Guild Assignments Tab Tips

  • This tab shows the user the fish species that were captured in the survey and what thermal, size and tolerance guilds are assigned. This table is not used in Verification process but is provided for additional information about the survey if the user is interested.
